Dear Sheldon Students and Families,

Welcome to the 2026–27 school year! We are excited to welcome our students and families back to Sheldon High School. There is something special about the beginning of a new school year: the opportunity to reconnect with friends and teachers, meet new people, take on new challenges, and begin another year together as the Irish community.

To our incoming ninth-grade students and families, welcome to Sheldon! We are thrilled to have you join us. High school is an exciting new chapter, and our goal is to make sure every student begins that journey knowing they have people here who care about them, believe in them, and are ready to help them succeed.

To our returning students and families, welcome back! We hope you are ready for another great year of learning, activities, athletics, performances, friendships, and all of the experiences that make Sheldon such a special place.

September 8 is our first day of school for ninth-grade students only. Transition Day is designed to give our newest Irish an opportunity to become comfortable at Sheldon before all students arrive the following day. During the day, ninth graders will:

All students in grades 9–12 will attend school beginning Wednesday, September 9. September 9 will be an A Day, and students should report to their scheduled A Day classes. We encourage students to review their schedules before arriving so they know where they need to go when the day begins.

As we begin this year, our work will center around a simple but powerful idea: students are more successful when they feel connected to school and know that they belong here. Our Student Success Framework gives us a way to think about that journey:

It begins with belonging. We want every Sheldon student to feel welcomed, known, valued, represented, and safe. We want students to build positive relationships with adults and peers and to find a place within our school where they can say, “This is my school. These are my people. I belong here.” When students feel connected, they are more likely to engage in their classes and the life of the school. When students are engaged, they are more likely to attend consistently. When they attend, they have greater opportunities to learn and ultimately to graduate prepared for whatever comes next. That work belongs to all of us.

One of our biggest areas of focus this year will be student attendance. We know that simply getting students through the doors isn't the entire answer. We also need to give them a reason to want to walk through those doors each morning. That means creating classrooms where students are known and challenged, activities where they can discover their interests, teams and clubs where they can build friendships, and a school community where every student can find a connection. Families are an essential part of that work. Please help us make regular attendance a priority. When challenges arise (and we know they sometimes will) reach out. Our goal is to work alongside students and families to understand barriers and find solutions.

We recognize that students come to school with different strengths, experiences, needs, and goals. Sheldon offers a wide range of resources to help students succeed, including our Counseling Department, Career Center, Academic Learning Center, Wellness Center, tutoring opportunities, Resource Navigators, 9th Grade Success Team, attendance supports, and community partnerships.

This year, we are continuing to strengthen supports for our ninth-grade students, including targeted academic interventions and opportunities to develop the skills and habits necessary for success throughout high school. We want students and families to know something important: asking for help is part of being successful. If you need support and aren't sure where to begin, reach out to us. We will help you find the right person.

Some of the most meaningful high school experiences happen beyond the classroom. We encourage every student to find something that connects them to Sheldon. Join a club. Try out for a team. Attend a game. Participate in music, theater, leadership, or another activity. Volunteer. Cheer on your classmates. Try something you've never done before.

And families: we want you involved, too. Throughout the year, we will continue creating opportunities for families and community partners to connect with our school and support our students. The stronger the relationships between our students, families, staff, and community, the stronger Sheldon becomes.

We have much to be proud of at Sheldon, and we also know that great schools never stop working to become better. Our challenge to ourselves this year is not simply to be a good school. Our students deserve a great school because we want every Sheldon student to have the opportunity to achieve greatness in whatever path they choose. That begins with knowing our students, building relationships, setting high expectations, providing support when students struggle, celebrating their successes, and creating a community where people genuinely care for one another.

Students, this is your school. Your voice, effort, ideas, talents, kindness, and participation will help determine what kind of year we have together. Families, thank you for trusting us with your students and for partnering with us in their education. We value that partnership and look forward to working alongside you throughout the year.

Requests to excuse absences must be received within 48 hours of the absence. If your student will miss 3 or more days of school due to a planned reason, use the Pre-arranged Absence Form available in the Attendance Office or on the Sheldon Website.

As you look at your student’s attendance in ParentView please ask your student about any attendance codes that may be coming up. If you need help signing up for ParentVue please do not hesitate to call Sheldon High School and we can help set that up for you.

Want to get more involved in the Sheldon community? We’d love to have you! In today’s schools, there are simply more jobs and responsibilities than there are people to do them. By volunteering at special events or helping with routine tasks, you can make a meaningful difference while allowing our teachers and staff to focus more on what matters most.  With the support of our volunteers, we can accomplish more and provide even more opportunities and services for our students and families.

As a new school year begins, consider talking with your teen about different ways to get to school. Walking, biking, scooting, skating, busing and carpooling can all be great options - and giving teens opportunities to travel independently helps them build confidence and important life skills.

If your teen is trying a new way to get to school, help them test the route ahead of time. Pro tip: the best walking or biking route isn’t always the same route you’d drive!
