We are excited to welcome you to Sheldon High School for our annual Open House on Wednesday, October 14! Open House is one of our favorite opportunities to bring our school community together! We look forward to opening our classroom doors, introducing you to our incredible teachers, and giving you a glimpse into the learning experiences your students have each day.
Whether your student is just beginning their journey at Sheldon or preparing for graduation, we hope you will join us for an evening of connection, conversation, and Irish pride!
Open House Details
Date: Wednesday, October 14, 2026
Time: 5:00–7:00 PM
Location: Sheldon High School
What to Expect
This year's Open House will follow the same format as last year, with families following a modified version of their student's daily schedule. You will spend 10 minutes in each classroom, with 5 minutes of passing time between periods. During each visit, teachers will introduce themselves, share an overview of their courses, and highlight the learning opportunities and expectations for students throughout the year.
This is a wonderful opportunity to put faces to names, experience your student's school day firsthand, and strengthen the partnership between home and school.

Before arriving, we encourage all parents and guardians to make sure they have access to ParentVUE. ParentVUE is an important tool for staying connected to your student's education. Through ParentVUE, you can view your student’s class schedule, monitor attendance, access midterm and final grades, and stay informed about their academic progress throughout the school year.
We strongly encourage families to log in to ParentVUE before Open House and have their student's schedule available on their phone or printed out. This will make it easy to find classrooms and follow your student's schedule throughout the evening.
If you haven't activated your ParentVUE account yet, now is a great time to get started!
At Sheldon, we believe that strong relationships between families, students, and staff are essential to student success. Open House is more than an opportunity to visit classrooms. It is a chance to celebrate our school community and strengthen the connections that help our students thrive. We know that families have busy schedules, and we appreciate the time you take to be involved in your student's education. Your partnership makes a difference, and we are excited to share the great things happening at Sheldon!

Requests to excuse absences must be received within 48 hours of the absence. If your student will miss 3 or more days of school due to a planned reason, use the Pre-arranged Absence Form available in the Attendance Office or on the Sheldon Website.
|
Our bell schedule makes attendance crucial for students' academic success and it's extremely important they attend bell to bell. We are seeing a number of students in the building, but not attending their whole classes. We want to remind you that we have multiple codes for attendance:
- Arriving to class marked VL (very late)
- Leaving early without permission, or asking to leave early for another reason
- Missing class entirely
|
Please note: You cannot reply directly to a notification email or text to excuse an absence. Family members must be registered in ParentSquare to send electronic attendance notes. To register, visit www.parentsquare.com/signin, and register using the email address or mobile phone number you provided your student's school.
|
As you look at your student’s attendance in ParentVue please ask your student about any attendance codes that may be coming up. If you need help signing up for ParentVue please do not hesitate to call Sheldon High School and we can help set that up for you.

We are reaching out to let you know that we will soon be asking our sophomore and junior students to complete a brief survey about their interest in a potential Honors Program. We want to share the context for this survey so you understand why we are asking these questions and what we hope to learn.
|
Why We Are Exploring an Honors Program
Our neighboring school districts offer variations of an honors diploma or honors designation that students can earn by meeting certain academic, career, or community engagement standards. These distinctions can benefit students in meaningful ways, including:
• Increased competitiveness for merit-based scholarships
• Recognition on transcripts reviewed by colleges and universities
• Acknowledgment of career and technical skills for workforce entry
• A sense of accomplishment and motivation to stay engaged through senior year
We want to ensure that our students have access to the same recognition opportunities as students in surrounding districts — and that we build any program in a way that is fair, accessible, and reflective of the many paths our students take after graduation.
|
What the Survey Asks
The survey asks students about three possible honors pathways we are considering:
• Academic Achievement — focused on advanced coursework in core subjects
• Career Technical Education (CTE) — focused on career pathways and hands-on skills
• Community Service — focused on volunteering and civic engagement
Students will also be asked for their opinions on things like GPA expectations, attendance requirements, the number of additional credits or courses they could realistically take on, and what type of recognition would be most meaningful to them.
|
What This Survey Is — and Is Not
This survey is the first step in a longer process of listening and planning. No program has been decided upon. Student responses will be reviewed by a committee that will use the findings to develop a proposal. Any new program would go through appropriate review processes before being implemented.
The survey is anonymous and voluntary. Students will not be asked to provide their name, and completing the survey does not obligate them to participate in any program.
Questions? If you have questions about the survey or the Honors Program initiative, please do not hesitate to contact us. We value your partnership and look forward to sharing what we learn from our students.

We have been made aware of a phone scam involving the PSAT. Callers are contacting families and asking for credit card information to pay for testing materials, claiming the charge will be refunded after testing.
This is a scam. Do not provide your credit card or payment information.
Please be cautious if you receive a call like this. Sheldon High School and 4J will not call families requesting credit card information for PSAT testing materials. The district is aware of the scam and has reported it to law enforcement.

4J's ongoing funding shortage is driving a major outreach to families this year around student technology use in classrooms.
The school district has always fully covered the cost of student technology device repair and replacement. Costs for this work have skyrocketed since 2020, when all students have been issued devices. With district financial reserves depleted, the district will run out of money to pay for device repair and replacement early this fall. Educators are asking parents—and students—to be aware of, and help reinforce, the proper care of devices so that repair and replacement is needed less.
This fall, schools are sending home technology use agreements for all parents to read and sign, to make them aware of how these tools are used in instruction and the expectations for students to care for them. Students will also receive care guides for their devices such as iPads and laptops.
"We can't immediately shift our instructional model to only using shared devices in the classroom," Superintendent Miriam Mickelson said. "Since we will need to continue supplying students during this year, we have no option but to continue repair and replacement as needed. But every dollar the district can save on tech repair matters when we are looking at more budget cuts."

We'd love to have your help! Our ambition this year is to assemble a regularly updated list of volunteers to assist with day-to-day needs here at Sheldon. Some of these people are parents, former staff members, and/or community members, all people like you!
So far, we have been getting started on planning with groups in the area to find ways folks can help. These are team efforts: Food Boxes or Food Drives, Clothing Drives, Personal Care Drives, Collecting for Prize Wheel Prizes, Prepping Staff Meals for specific events, Clothing Sorting.
What we would like to offer soon are some smaller opportunities for Individual Volunteering. Folks like yourself that might have 1-3 hours at a time to come in and help in small assignments throughout the building. There are some areas which can ALWAYS use a regular, ongoing volunteer to help (such as the Front Office greeting and answering phones). There are sometimes opportunities for projects that might last a few days or a couple of weeks (such as in the College and Career Center organizing materials and signups for specific scholarship opportunities). We would love to have a people standing daily at the various points of entry to the building to welcome students as they come in for the day or back from Lunch.
Our goal is to welcome volunteers in various areas, even sometimes for just one or two days at a time to see if certain tasks are a good fit and try to pair people who are helpful with the students and staff who could really use the help.
All volunteers will need to go through our 4J Volunteer Application, so if you haven't already done so, that will be your first step. The application only takes about 5 minutes and the clearance usually takes about a week or two to get an email response back.
Once you have completed this step, please email Higgs_L@4j.lane.edu to express your interest in joining our building volunteer team. Please include any specific tasks or roles you are interested in pursuing. We can then arrange a brief Introduction to Volunteering meeting at Sheldon. These meetings typically last 30 minutes to an hour and can be scheduled individually or with a small group.
We are already slowly growing a small crew of recurring volunteers this year who've joined us on a regular basis. We can't wait to have more community support join us in our building!
Thank you all for your willingness to help our kids and GO IRISH!
